Psalm 76
Psalm 1-25 |
Fifteenth Day: Evening PrayerPsalm 78Part I Attendite, popule 1 Hear my teaching, O my people; *
I will open my mouth in a parable; *
That which we have heard and known,
We will recount to generations to come
He gave his decrees to Jacob
That the generations to come might know,
So that they might put their trust in God, *
And not be like their forefathers,
The people of Ephraim, armed with the bow, *
They did not keep the covenant of God, *
They forgot what he had done, *
He worked marvels in the sight of their forefathers, *
He split open the sea and let them pass through; *
He led them with a cloud by day, *
He split the hard rocks in the wilderness *
He brought streams out of the cliff, *
But they went on sinning against him, *
They tested God in their hearts, *
They railed against God and said, *
True, he struck the rock, the waters gushed out, and the
When the LORD heard this, he was full of wrath; *
For they had no faith in God, *
So he commanded the clouds above *
He rained down manna upon them to eat *
So mortals ate the bread of angels; *
He caused the east wind to blow in the heavens *
He rained down flesh upon them like dust *
He let it fall in the midst of their camp *
So they ate and were well filled, *
But they did not stop their craving, *
So God’s anger mounted against them; *
In spite of all this, they went on sinning *
So he brought their days to an end like a breath *
Whenever he slew them, they would seek him, *
They would remember that God was their rock, *
But they flattered him with their mouths *
Their heart was not steadfast toward him, *
But he was so merciful that he forgave their sins
For he remembered that they were but flesh, *
Psalm 78: Part II Quoties exacerbaverunt 40 How often the people disobeyed him in the wilderness *
Again and again they tempted God *
They did not remember his power *
How he wrought his signs in Egypt *
He turned their rivers into blood, *
He sent swarms of flies among them, which ate them up, *
He gave their crops to the caterpillar, *
He killed their vines with hail *
He delivered their cattle to hailstones *
He poured out upon them his blazing anger: *
He gave full rein to his anger;
He struck down all the firstborn of Egypt, *
He led out his people like sheep *
He led them to safety, and they were not afraid; *
He brought them to his holy land, *
He drove out the Canaanites before them
But they tested the Most High God, and defied him, *
They turned away and were disloyal like their fathers; *
The grieved him with their hill-altars *
When God heard this, he was angry *
He forsook the shrine at Shiloh, *
He delivered the ark into captivity, *
He gave his people to the sword *
The fire consumed their young men; *
Their priests fell by the sword, *
Then the LORD woke as though from sleep, *
He struck his enemies on the backside *
He rejected the tent of Joseph *
He chose instead the tribe of Judah *
He built his sanctuary like the heights of heaven, *
He chose David his servant, *
He brought him from following the ewes, *
So he shepherded them with a faithful and true heart *
